5 Ways to Practice Self-Care this Holiday Season

You may have heard the old adage, “you can’t love others until you love yourself.” The same is true with self-care. Ensuring you meet your own needs gives you wider flexibility to care for others in your life. This can be as simple as taking a walk to clear your head or as complex as seeing a therapist. It’s up to you, do what feels right.

There are many things you can do to make sure you’re taking care of yourself. While the term “self care” might sound indulgent, it’s actually necessary for your mental and physical health.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Exercise

Sometimes the best way to clear your head is to get your heart pumping. Go for a walk, run, or even do a few stretches!

Netflix

Escape from reality and dive into your favorite TV show. Even if you just watch one episode, getting out of your own world and into someone else’s can be just what you need.

Read

Find a good book and allow yourself to enjoy it. Try reading a chapter or two before bed. Getting away from the blue light of your cell phone might improve your sleep as well!

Unplug

It’s been shown that too much social media usage can affect your self-esteem. Take some time away from your phone, computer, or tablet to reset. Enjoy real life interactions and appreciate what you’ve been given.

Play with a pet

According to WebMD, petting your cat or dog can help relieve your stress and also lower your blood pressure.
