You’re exercising and you’re eating right, so why aren’t you losing weight? According to Dr. Jim Bledsoe of Ogden Clinic, it may be because you’re not getting the right kind of exercise.
What are the best exercises for people trying to lose weight?
The best exercises for losing weight are exercises that get your heart pumping and that get as many of your muscles activated as possible. Some of the best weight-loss exercises include:
- Jump Rope
I did triathlons for many years, but I got tired of them. For one, I found that riding a bike takes too much time to get a good workout. I ended up deciding that I needed to try something new.
What is your exercise of choice?
Personally, I’ve recently taken up a form of martial arts called ‘Krav Maga.’ It’s an awesome workout — it activates all the muscles that would be activated jumping rope, or doing squats, or lunges, or burpees, and it does it virtually all at the same time. It’s really a very thorough, efficient workout, while still being fun to do.
Why did you choose Krav Maga?
Frankly, it just seemed like something that I would really enjoy. The philosophy of Krav Maga is that anybody, any age, any physical condition, should be able to learn it. I’ve only been doing it for five months now, and I’m no ‘tough guy,’ but maybe a couple of years from now I will be.
Is diet as important as exercise?
Yes, absolutely. And we’re learning more about diet and nutrition all the time.
In the 1980’s, fat was the “great evil” that everyone wanted to avoid. Companies would remove the fat from foods, but in order to make the food palatable, they’d replace that fat with extra carbs. So ironically, the more low-fat food people ate, the heavier they got, and our nation’s obesity epidemic skyrocketed.
Today, we understand that carbs are really the thing that should be avoided. Carbs trigger an insulin response in your body, and it’s that insulin that triggers fat storage. I encourage people to follow the GPS diet:
- G – minimize your grains and breads
- P – minimize potatoes and pasta
- S – minimize sugars and sweets
